22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi claimed his very first tour-level win in straight sets against Jaume Munar at the Barcelona Open last week but he has already eclipsed that feat with a huge upset over world number four Casper Ruud on Friday. The Italian will break the top 100 on tour for the first time after qualifying for his Masters debut this week and whilst a three-set result over Benoit Paire was expected a straight-sets result over Ruud, one of the best clay-courters around despite his poor start to 2023, could be life-changing as he takes unquenchable confidence into the third round. World number 88 Jaume Munar has reached this stage via three tiebreaks after Tallon Griekspoor retired from their match in the second set on Friday. The 25-year-old looks to be regaining some of his bite after a tetchy opener against Thanasi Kokkinakis but a quick rematch with Arnaldi sees all the pressure resting squarely on his shoulders as the higher-ranked home hopeful.
