THE PREDICTION

World number 32 Marta Kostyuk set a statement of intent last week by choosing to play at the San Diego 500 over defending her Austin 250 title and she was justified in that decision by beating the likes of Jessica Pegula and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to the final before a shock defeat to Katie Boulter. The 21-year-old reached her first Grand Slam quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January to build on some promising signs over the past 12 months and she could be something of a dark horse here at Indian Wells with all the tools to excel in these conditions. 24-year-old Mai Hontama will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 106th after coming back from a set down to extend Shuai Zhang’s record-breaking losing streak to 19 matches but this looks too steep of a climb against Kostyuk. Back the Ukrainian to bounce back strong from her San Diego upset to win this kind opener in straight sets.

TIP: MARTA KOSTYUK TO WIN 2-0
