THE PREDICTION
World number 28 Elise Mertens was in control of her first round match over Mayar Sherif before the Egyptian was forced to retire early in their second set on Monday. 28-year-old Mertens finished runner-up to Emma Navarro at the Hobart International last weekend but she will take the positives from a strong week, with her most recent of eight WTA titles coming in October at the Jasmin Open. World number 37 Marta Kostyuk laboured to a three-set victory over Claire Liu on Monday but she should be better for a choppy opener, with decent runs in Brisbane and Adelaide so far this season encouraging.
Mertens beat the Ukrainian in straight sets in their only previous encounter at Indian Wells in 2022 but this should come a lot closer, with both players enjoying the conditions here in previous seasons. Neither player has lost a second round match in Melbourne but that will have to change on Wednesday. Back the more dependable Mertens to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
