THE LOWDOWN

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

Former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova was still in a cast this time last season after surgery on her wrist but the Czech has completed her comeback to the top 20 by reaching the Wimbledon final for the first time. 24-year-old Vondrousova will move up to at least 16th for her efforts so far, upsetting the likes of Veronika Kudermetova and Jessica Pegula before a stunning performance against Elina Svitolina on Thursday, but she can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 10th with victory on Saturday. Vondrousova finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 in her maiden Grand Slam final and she also finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

ONS JABEUR

World number six Ons Jabeur will return to the Wimbledon final one year on from her close-run, shock defeat to Elena Rybakina. The 28-year-old avenged that defeat with a comeback of her own in the quarter-finals and then maintained that incredible level to, again, come back from a set and a break down to beat the pre-tournament favourite Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday. Jabeur has twice finished runner-up at Grand Slams after losing to Iga Swiatek at the US Open last summer but reaching six quarter-finals or higher within her past 11 major appearances is testament to her meteoric rise over the last few seasons. The former world number two can move back up to world number three with victory here, usurping the woman who beat her in the final this time 12 months ago.

THE PREDICTION

This is a hugely unlikely duo in the Wimbledon final but both players thoroughly deserve their place as former major finalists who have taken their respective draws by storm. World number six Ons Jabeur’s run to the final this summer has been considerably harder than last year’s, with each of her last four opponents having won at least one Grand Slam title – including two-time former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. Taking out the two Australian Open finalists in Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka in the last two rounds should be enough for any player to lift the famous Venus Rosewater Basin but she will have to dig in once more against the inexplicable, highly talented Marketa Vondrousova.

24-year-old Vondrousova deserves this third chance at glory on a big stage after playing her first major final in Paris without any experience on Philippe-Chatrier and then the Tokyo Olympics final in an empty stadium due to the pandemic conditions in 2021. The Czech had never made it past the second round at Wimbledon before this fortnight but her gorgeous, deceptive game is perfect for the surface when she is fit and firing on all cylinders. Vondrousova’s run has been of a more consistent quality after upsetting 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova as early as the second round but she has stood up to the challenge in three-set victories over Marie Bouzkova and Jessica Pegula before masterfully rising above the noise as the least-favoured player against Svitolina.

Jabeur beat Vondrousova on grass at the Eastbourne International in 2021 and she leads the Czech 3-2 at tour-level but Vondrousova has won each of their last two encounters this season at the Australian Open and Indian Wells. Two of their last three meetings went to three sets and three comeback wins for Jabeur this fortnight make that outcome seem feasible. The conditions realistically suit both players here as Vondrousova continues to improve on the surface but the crowd should play the deciding factor here as they pull almost as one for the popular Tunisian. Three sets seem likely but Vondrousova has struggled in finals, losing each of her last four since claiming a maiden trophy in 2017. Back Jabeur to win this outright amidst rapturous celebration.
