THE LOWDOWN

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

Former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova is through to the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time after an excellent straight-sets victory over a fatigued Donna Vekic on Friday. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 on her favoured clay but she is a serious talent across all surfaces when fit and firing like this. Vondrousova also upset 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova this week, ousting the Russian in the second round to reach the third for the first time at SW19.

MARIE BOUZKOVA

World number 33 Marie Bouzkova is just one match away from emulating her career-best run to the quarter-finals here last summer and she looks, arguably, even better form this summer. The 24-year-old overcame the fifth seed Caroline Garcia in three tight, marathon sets late on Friday night to look a creditable threat to anyone left in the draw at SW19 and she will be desperate to match her run after missing out on the ranking points last summer.

THE PREDICTION

This should be am enthralling battle between two Czechs in Marketa Vondrousova and Marie Bouzkova, with two very different games. Vondrousova possesses one of the highest ceilings on tour but her eye-catching game is rarely in its top gear and that should contrast well with Bouzkova’s tireless intensity on court. Bouzkova’s win over Caroline Garcia is the pick of the bunch between them so far, particularly late in the atmosphere on Court 1, but Vondrousova leads their tour-level head-to-head 2-0 after a comfortable victory at Indian Wells in March. Bouzkova has improved significantly since that period of the season but this looks wide open. Take Bouzkova to earn at least a set with the fight to take this close and leave the victor up to chance.
