THE PREDICTION

Former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova came into the Italian Open at number 70 as she continues to work her way back from a long injury-related absence this season and she looks well capable of doing so after stunning Maria Sakkari in straight sets on Sunday. The 23-year-old is one of the more unpredictable players on tour with some clear weaknesses but when everything clicks into gear she is one of the more natural talents, especially in conditions like these in Rome as a former Roland-Garros finalist from 2019. World number six Elena Rybakina first burst onto the scene with a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2021 but she has since won her maiden Grand Slam at Wimbledon last summer and finished runner-up at the Australian Open this January. The Kazakh, also 23, has struggled to beat the better players on clay so far this season but her overall form for the year makes it hard to back her opponent in any contest.

Vondrousova won their first encounter in straight sets two years ago but the Kazakh is a totally different prospect now. Back Vondrousova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance in what could be a thriller.
