MARIN CILIC
World number 24 Marin Cilic overcame tough clay specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets on Tuesday for a solid start to his Madrid Open campaign. The former world number three won his only Masters title at the 2016 Cincinnati Open and whilst he is probably at his most effective on grass and hardcourts he owns two clay ATP titles amongst his now career total of 20.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
World number three Alexander Zverev enjoyed his best season on tour last season with six titles on, five on the ATP tour including the Madrid Open, Cincinnati Open and ATP Finals as well as a superb Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The defending champion comes in with a point to prove after a poor display against Holger Rune at the Munich Open last week and some bridges to rebuild with fans after his ugly outburst at the Mexican Open saw him disqualified from the tournament. Zverev also won the Madrid Open in 2018, the third of five Masters titles overall.
THE PREDICTION
Zverev leads Cilic 6-1 in their head-to-head after losing his first meeting with the Croatian as a teenager at the 2015 Washington Open. The 24-year-old frankly owns a bigger, better version of Cilic’s game and that has shown over the years with six-straight victories, although the two have not met since the group stages of the 2018 ATP Finals. Zverev beat Cilic in three sets here back in 2017 and in straight sets a year later at the Rome Masters for a 2-0 lead on clay. The German is likely to come in swinging after his disappointment at the Munich Open and he can be backed to win outright inside an accumulator or tentatively in straight sets in a one off.
