THE PREDICTION

World number five Maria Sakkari is so far quietly going about her business at Wimbledon with back-to-back straight set victories over Zoe Hives and Viktoriya Tomova. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season, losing to the eventual champions of both in Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon. Despite owning just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open she remains a constant threat to every tournament she enters and this looks another winnable fixture in her so far kind draw against world number 103 Tatjana Maria. The 34-year-old did upset the 26th seed Sorana Cirstea on Wednesday in her second three-set victory this campaign but Sakkari is a significant step up in quality. The Greek won their only previous tour-level meeting in straight sets earlier this season in the first round of the Australian Open but it was hard-fought. That, and Tatjana Maria’s gutsy performances so far, makes backing Sakkari to win outright the suitably cautious pick.
