THE LOWDOWN

MARIA SAKKARI

World number five Maria Sakkari overcame a stern test from Madison Keys on Friday, coming back from a 10-8 opening tiebreak to beat the American in three sets. The 26-year-old still has just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open but she reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season including Roland-Garros, where she lost to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in three sets. Sakkari has finished runner-up twice this season to Anett Kontaveit at the St. Petersburg Open and Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells.

DARIA KASATKINA

World number 23 Daria Kasatkina came back from a set down to beat in-form Anna Bondar on Friday. The 24-year-old has an excellent game for all surfaces but she won her first WTA title on clay at the Charleston Open in 2017 and she set a best Grand Slam showing with a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros a year later. Kasatkina set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th in 2018 after reaching the final of Indian Wells.

THE PREDICTION

Kasatkina beat Sakkari twice on tour in 2018, when the Russian was at the peak of her powers, in three sets at both Roland-Garros and the Canadian Open. Since then their careers have drifted in opposite directions to see Sakkari the high-ranking seed in this third meeting and the likelier of two very capable winners. Kasatkina’s record against the Greek suggests backing Sakkari to win at least a set is the suitably cautious pick here but she should be able to find a way through outright.
