THE PREDICTION
This promises to be an entertaining opener to the round of 16 at the Estoril Open on Wednesday as two Italian veterans meet for the fifth time on tour. Former world number nine Fabio Fognini leads their head-to-head record 3-1 after beating Cecchinato from a set down at the Serbia Open last summer but three of their four matches have seen sets go both ways, all on clay, to suggest this could come down to the wire once again. 35-year-old Fognini has been enduring a long period of poor form by his previous standards but he should find some respite on the clay swing as a former Monte-Carlo champion and he conceded just three games in the first round. 30-year-old Cecchinato overcame an out-of-sorts Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Monday but Schwartzman is largely beating himself on court these days. Either take Fognini to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners or go for the three set option here.
