THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki reached at least the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam on 10 occasions before finally breaking her duck at the Australian Open in 2018. The Dane retired here in 2020, with 30 WTA titles to show for an illustrious career, but she surprised everyone by returning to the sport last summer, fabulously reaching the round of 16 at the US Open before a defeat in three sets to eventual champion Coco Gauff. Tournament organisers are likely to hand 33-year-old Wozniacki a show court, possibly even Rod Laver, and that should aid her in a relatively tough opener against world number 24 Magda Linette, who enjoyed the form of her career in reaching the semi-finals here last year.

31-year-old Linette has struggled to match that intensity since, perhaps struggling with the new target on her back after spending much of her career outside the top 40, and she stands to plummet down the rankings if she cannot produce another shock run in Melbourne. Wozniacki leads their head-to-head 2-0 but this should be considered a clean slate with their last meeting coming in 2017. Back the former champion to edge through a likely nerve-ridden match outright.

TIP: CAROLINE WOZNIACKI TO WIN
