THE LOWDOWN

28-year-old Madison Keys made full use of Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova’s injury-hampered game to blast through their quarter-final in straight sets on Wednesday. The American will move back up to world number 11 for her efforts after going one further than her quarter-final exit, to Aryna Sabalenka, at SW19 back in July but she has experience of more in New York as runner-up to Sloane Stephens in 2017.

25-year-old Aryna Sabalenka beat Qinwen Zheng in straight sets on Wednesday to reach a fifth-consecutive Grand Slam semi-final. The Belarussian is yet to drop a set in New York, where she has made the last four for a third consecutive season, and she looks the odd-on favourite to lift her second Grand Slam title on Saturday to complement her maiden major claimed at the Australian Open in January. Sabalenka will become the world number one for the first time no matter the outcome here after Iga Swiatek crashed out of the round of 16.

THE PREDICTION

Former finalist Madison Keys has enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals of the US Open for the third time in her career, earning her place with three excellent results over Liudmila Samsonova, Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova. However, the American looked strong at Wimbledon until suddenly becoming the less powerful player on court against Sabalenka in a match that never looked like hers from the first game. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 2-1 after a loss to Keys, again on grass, at the Berlin Open in 2021 but the Belarussian’s resolve and power simply look too strong for anyone in this draw right now. Back the incoming world number one to win in straight sets.
