World number 59 Mackenzie McDonald has enjoyed the best form of his career in patches this season and he recently upset defending Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz en-route to the semi-finals before a three-set defeat to eventual winner Francisco Cerundolo. The 28-year-old has struggled to impose himself on his last three tournaments but there is certainly a chance at a big win here against former world number 13 Aslan Karatsev, who has blown very hot and very cold all year long. World number 71 Karatsev burst back into form to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters back in May but he has failed to win back-to-back matches since, although he has come up against some very tough foes. The pair beat each other in two quick matches early last season, with Karatsev taking their Australian Open clash in four sets and McDonald returning the favour in straight sets in Dubai a month later. McDonald has earned at least a set from both of their encounters to offer a suitable way to avoid a winner here but Karatsev is always boiling under the surface. Take the Russian to earn at least a set to leave this tough one up to chance.
