World number 11 Cam Norrie took Carlos Alcaraz to three sets in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open before defeat to the eventual champion but it was another excellent week on the Brit’s least favourite surface. The 26-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open the week before and he looks set for a comfortable opener in Rome against Italian wildcard Luca Nardi. 18-year-old Nardi is touted for big things as Italian tennis continues to rise and he has won two titles on the Challenger tour this season. Nardi took a set from Marcos Giron in defeat on his ATP tour debut at the 2020 European Open at 16 years old and there will be likely be a sizeable crowd in attendance for him in Rome to give him an edge. Backing Norrie to win outright given the circumstances would be sensible but realistically the Brit can do this in two.
