THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Matteo Berrettini survived a scare against Radu Albot on Thursday in his first match back since an injury at Indian Wells in March. The 26-year-old enjoyed the form of his career at this stage of last season, winning a first ATP 500 event at Queen’s Club on grass before a stunning run to the final at Wimbledon and a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic. The Italian does not take much winding up to get back to form and if he can stay fit he is the fair favourite to beat his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in their first meeting on tour. World number 32 Sonego overcame Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday to make it back-to-back straight-set wins in Stuttgart and the 27-year-old has also found success on grass, winning his first ATP title on the surface at the Antalya Open back in 2019. There is a degree of uncertainty here over Berrettini’s recovery after so long off the tour and so backing the second seed to win at least a set is the suitably cautious move here.
