THE LOWDOWN

World number 23 Lorenzo Musetti is the clear favourite to lift the Next Gen ATP Finals title this weekend after enjoying the best season of his career in 2022 and he got his campaign underway in Milan with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Chun-hsin Tseng. The 20-year-old made a disappointing debut here last season but claiming his first two ATP titles at the Hamburg Open and Napoli Cup have seen him bring a more assured game to his second Next Gen campaign. With victories over the likes of Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud in Paris last week no longer surprising.

World number 111 Dominic Stricker put in one of the best performances of his young career on Tuesday to oust Jack Draper in three tight tiebreaks. The 20-year-old Swiss has been quiet on tour this season after first surfacing last summer but a recent campaign at the Swiss Indoors saw an excellent victory over Maxime Cressy and a three-set defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta suggest big things for 2023.

THE PREDICTION

Dominic Stricker has beaten the likes of Botic van de Zandschulp, Maxime Cressy and now Jack Draper in recent weeks to show a sudden surge in form but he faces the home favourite, in Milan, at the peak of his powers in Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian has transformed his game on hardcourts over the indoors swing, beating the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Miomir Kecmanovic, Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud in recent weeks to eclipse Stricker’s results. Sets should go both ways here but it is hard to see the Milan crowd letting Stricker get away with too much on Wednesday. Back Musetti to win outright, with five sets distinctly possible here.
