THE PREDICTION
This is, remarkably, the fourth time that Qinwen Zheng and Liudmila Samsonova have been drawn together at a tournament since last September, when Samsonova beat the Chinese to win the Tokyo Open final. Their last fixture was called off at the Dubai Masters in February after Zheng was forced to withdraw through injury but this could be a brilliant match if their previous meeting was anything to go by as the Russian edged through in three sets to reach the Abu Dhabi Open final two weeks before. Zheng beat Samsonova on clay in their first of three actual matches but world number 15 Samsonova seems to have the edge on hardcourts so far to lead 2-1 overall. The Russian conceded just two games to Viktorija Golubic on Thursday in a statement of intent but world number 23 Zheng came back from a set down to beat a tough player in Irina-Camelia Begu. Both players are well capable of deep runs here in Miami but back Samsonova to win outright given her very recent record over Zheng in these conditions.
