17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 50th last month after a brilliant run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January but despite some strong results she has failed to win back-to-back matches since then. A three-set victory over Jil Teichmann at the Charleston Open earlier this month is always a strong result on clay, though, and the altitude in Madrid should suit her powerful strokes in a first meeting with Katie Volynets. 21-year-old Volynets also set a career-high last month, of 74th, but she has fallen back outside the top 100 this week. The American produced an encouraging run to the semi-finals of the Austin Open in early March but she failed to win a match since and Fruhvirtova should prove too powerful for her here. Back the Czech to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
