THE PREDICTION
World number 35 Anastasia Potapova took Karolina Pliskova to three sets at the Qatar Masters last week for an encouraging exit but she is far from the level that saw her stun Coco Gauff at the Miami Open 11 months ago. The 22-year-old suffered an oddly drab first round exit at the Australian Open last month and she laboured to the quarter-finals of the Linz Open as defending champion before a tough defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova. World number 57 Lin Zhu also failed to defend her title at the Hua Hin Championships two weeks ago, although she took it right to the wire in finishing runner-up to Diana Shnaider. A defeat to Elena Rybakina at the Qatar Masters last week was to be expected but a solid win over Varvara Gracheva before it says the Chinese is not resting on her laurels. Potapova won their first meeting in straight sets at the Prague Open in 2022 but it was a tight win that could come tighter still here. Back Potapova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
