THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva beat Dayana Yastremska in straight sets on Tuesday to start what promises to be a special week in Hong Kong. The Russian came into the tournament at a career-high WTA world ranking of 50th after another huge run at a prestigious tournament, beating 2021 Roland-Garros finalists Barbora Krejcikova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets before a three-set exit to Elena Rybakina in the round of 16. Andreeva’s best run of the season was a quarter-final exit to Madison Keys at Wimbledon, also in three sets, but she her breakthrough on tour came at the Madrid Masters in a run to the round of 16 that started with an upset over Leylah Fernandez. Former world number 13 Fernandez will be desperate to avenge things here and she may feel like riding her luck after Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire from their match yesterday having taken the first set. Fernandez is capable of much better tennis than she has produced over the past 12 months but this sort of match brings the best out of her. Consider a one-off on this scrap to see three sets or take Andreeva to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
