THE PREDICTION

There is a real buzz around former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez this week as she continues to enjoy her most convincing elite-level run in some time. The 21-year-old ended last season in excellent form, winning the Hong Kong Open and leading Canada to their inaugural BJK Cup title, but wins over Liudmila Samsonova, Paula Badosa and Australian Open runner-up Qinwen Zheng this week in Doha puts her working level firmly inside top 20 territory. Whether or not she will have enough to combat world number four Elena Rybakina in this mouth-watering first encounter between the two remains to be seen but 24-year-old Rybakina laboured to victory over Emma Navarro on Wednesday to suggest there is still some fragility in her current winning six-match winning streak.

The Kazakh won her second WTA title of the season in Abu Dhabi last weekend but dropped sets there to Danielle Collins and the aforementioned Samsonova provide an aggressive blueprint for Fernandez, who will be desperate to impress in this blockbuster fixture, to follow. The suitably cautious pick is backing Rybakina to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable semi-finalists but if forced to side with a winner the third seed should find a way through.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN A SET
