Whilst Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez were making all the headlines at the US Open in 2021, Clara Tauson was quietly producing some searing tennis as another exciting 18-year-old to pick up two WTA titles in Lyon and Luxembourg. This first tour-level meeting between the former junior rivals should be the first of many as two of the most exciting rising stars on the WTA tour but both have endured a tough past 12 months struggling with fitness and form. 20-year-old Tauson conceded just two games to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in a hugely impressive opener on Sunday that sees her through to the second round for a third-successive season in Paris whilst Fernandez, also 20, fought past 21st seed Magda Linette in three sets to look up for the battle. The Canadian reached the quarter-finals here last season before defeat to Martina Trevisan but it is hard to confidently back a winner in this likely thriller. Take Tauson to earn at least a set here after her blistering start but leave this match well away from an accumulator.
