THE PREDICTION

World number five Caroline Garcia stuttered through a straight-sets victory over Katie Volynets on Monday to get her Wimbledon campaign underway. The 29-year-old burst into form this time last season to win a title on all three surfaces, including the Cincinnati Masters and the year-end WTA Finals, but she has yet to find that level this year. World number 95 Leylah Fernandez set a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th after finishing runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open in 2021 but she has enjoyed the better runs at majors of the two since, although a serious foot injury last summer has scuppered her progress. Garcia has already beaten Fernandez twice this season at the Australian Open and Indian Wells but both matches were close and competitive. 20-year-old Fernandez needed three sets to come past Kateryna Baindl on Monday but she will be up for the challenge as a big-game player well capable of taking this to three too. Back Garcia to win outright but this potential thriller would be best kept away from accumulators.
