Former number 39 Aleksandra Krunic qualified for only her second tour-level match since 2022, where she suffered a serious ACL injury that kept her away from tennis until last summer. The 31-year-old lost to Clara Burel comfortably at this stage of the Australian Open in January but two impressive wins in qualifying this weekend suggests she is ready to compete here in Miami as she faces a fellow qualifier in a huge opportunity for both. World number 90 Laura Siegemund conceded just two games in qualifying to look hungry for a return to the form that saw her start 2024 so well, partnering with Alexander Zverev to claim the United Cup title for Germany in January and stunning the likes of Liudmila Samsonova and Ekaterina Alexandrova in singles. Krunic won their only previous encounter in straight sets two years ago, on clay, but Siegemund’s blistering qualifying run and overall form this season hands her the edge on form.
