THE PREDICTION

World number two Novak Djokovic looked an overwhelming favourite to reach at least the US Open final once his inordinately kind draw was revealed and he has so far coasted as expected, conceding just 11 games so far in wins over Alexandre Muller and Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The 36-year-old three-time US Open champion looks set for a collision course with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz next Sunday in what would be their third-successive final on tour after the Spaniard won their Wimbledon epic in five sets and Djokovic returned the favour in another classic to lift the Cincinnati trophy two weeks ago. In-form Laslo Djere has been unfortunate to meet his compatriot so early in the draw after blasting through Brandon Nakashima and Hugo Gaston in straight sets apiece. The 28-year-old could well earn a third career title on the late hardcourt swing in this mood with a recent run to the Hamburg 500 final seeing him just miss out to Alexander Zverev, and he will take some hope in the fact that he took the first set from Djokovic in their only previous encounter on his favoured clay in Belgrade last summer.

Four sets are a distinct possibility but a tiebreak is likelier. Back Djokovic to win in straight sets and consider adding at least a tiebreak, outside of an accumulator, with two played between them last summer.
