THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Kei Nishikori returned to the ATP tour after an almost two-year ling hiatus with a straight-sets victory over Jordan Thompson on Tuesday. The 33-year-old’s last match was a three-set defeat to Dan Evans at the October Indian Wells in 2021 but he recently made his return to tennis on the Challenger tour, winning his first title in Puerto Rico last month as he worked his way back up to world number 439 ahead of this week in Atlanta. 18-year-old Juncheng Shang qualified well over the weekend before an excellent straight-sets upset over Ben Shelton in the first round. The teenager claimed only his second ever tour level result that day to bring a heap of confidence and no short amount of momentum into this biggest match of his career and it remains to be seen how Nishikori fares as he continues to rehabilitate back to tour life. Nishikori should be strong enough to come through here but backing Shang to earn at least a set could be the shrewd move. Leave this match well away from any accumulators.
