World number 90 Katerina Siniakova stunned third seed Sorana Cirstea in straight sets on Wednesday to blow her portion of the draw wide open in Ningbo and this looks a much kinder follow-up against number 87 Nadia Podoroska. Both players are on their way back up the rankings as players capable of much better than their current ranks suggest but Podoroska’s journey has been much more protracted after missing a year through injury last season. The Argentine survived a scare on Wednesday with a comeback over qualifier Valeria Savinykh but her opening victory over Guangzhou champion Xiyu Wang was an impressive one. Siniakova found the form of her career this time last season but she has struggled this season either side of a strong week winning the Bad Homburg Open in June. Victory over Cirstea makes her the favourite here but a first meeting between two very capable winners looks too tough to call outright. Back Siniakova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
