THE PREDICTION

This should be a good-natured battle on Tuesday between friends, compatriots and doubles partners in world number six Andrey Rublev and number 12 Karen Khachanov. The pair share a finely poised 2-2 head-to-head record with at least one match played on each surface but Rublev beat Khachanov in straight sets en-route to the Monte-Carlo Open title earlier this month to take their only clay encounter. 25-year-old Rublev has also won each of their last two meetings, with Khachanov’s coming on grass at Halle in 2017 and on hardcourt at Indian Wells two years later. Both of Khachanov’s matches have gone to three sets so far this week whilst in-form Rublev has beaten Stan Wawrinka and Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets to make it 10-1 on clay this season so far.

The pair will play alongside each other today against fifth seeds Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic before facing off in the round of 16 tomorrow and it will be fascinating to see what weaknesses they target in each other’s games. Back Rublev, on recent form and in these conditions, to edge past Khachanov here and you can consider adding a tiebreak for good measure given that three of their four previous encounters have seen one.
