The up-and-coming Russian started 2023 off on fire with a remarkable performance against Maria Sakkari, to whom she eventually lost in three sets, at the Australian Open but she has been quieter on tour than expected since. World number 77 Kamilla Rakhimova came back from a set down to beat Arantxa Rus to get her a solid foothold in at the Ningbo Open but the 22-year-old should find a fiercer opponent here. This is their first tour level meeting but Shnaider did beat Rakhimova in qualifying at the Kremlin Cup two years ago to suggest the younger Russian has better weapons.
