THE PREDICTION

World number 94 Juan Pablo Varillas came back from two sets down for the second-successive match to upset 19th seed Roberto Bautista Agut on Wednesday. The Peruvian did the same to Juncheng Shang in the first round to take a bizarre record into his first ever third round at this level – with each of his now four Grand Slam matches going to five sets. World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz has also seen both of his matches go the distance so far in this record-breaking week for five-set matches and taking a one-off punt on this first meeting between the two to do the same seems a reasonable call. Hurkacz has spent an extra hour on court this week after an especially gruelling battle with Tallon Griekspoor on Wednesday included a mammoth 15-13 tiebreak but the Pole is no stranger to a deciding set on tour. Varillas is the more comfortable clay-courter here, with Hurkacz playing well so far despite struggling in these conditions.

The 13th seed should be coming through this match-up on ability but if the five-set options is too much of a risk the sensible pick is backing Hurkacz to earn at least two sets here and leaving the victor up to chance.
