THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Jordan Thompson set a career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd back in 2019 and he is one win away from breaking that after enjoying an excellent spell of form. The Aussie came back from a set down to beat an admittedly spent Rafael Nadal at the Brisbane International last month but Thompson is playing perhaps the best tennis of his career to put himself in that sort of occasion, with a four-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Melbourne last time out a very close-run thing. Thompson conceded just four games to wildcard Adam Neff on Wednesday and he looks the solid favourite to reach the quarter-finals here against world number 174 Denis Kudla, who came through qualifying as a lucky loser this weekend before a straight-sets result over Radu Albot.
Thompson beat Kudla in the first round here last season but Kudla returned the favour in Delray Beach a week later to level their tour-level head-to-head at 2-2. The Aussie has thoroughly improved since then but an outright call remains the sensible option here with three sets a distinct possibility.
TIP: JORDAN THOMPSON TO WIN
