THE PREDICTION

World number 27 John Isner has beaten two fellow Americans this week in three sets, with a comeback victory over Steve Johnson on Thursday backed up with an impressive result over Frances Tiafoe late on Friday night. The 36-year-ol veteran comes with serious doubles form after he won the ‘Sunshine Double’ at Indian Wells alongside Jack Sock and the Miami Open alongside Hubert Hurkacz and that has certainly improved his level in the singles at Houston. World number 29 Cristian Garin will be a tougher foe on clay, though, as the Chilean has exhibited so far this campaign. The 25-year-old overcame second seed Taylor Fritz in three sets on Friday to back-up two comeback victories over Jack Sock and Jordan Thompson on his favoured surface. After a gruelling start to the 2022 season Garin has finally found some form and that will be a tough force for Isner to cope with against a player who owns five titles on clay. Considering each of Garin’s matches has gone to three sets, take Isner to win at least one here with the backing of a partisan crowd.
