THE PREDICTION

World number 47 John Isner put in an assured display to beat Oscar Otte in straight sets in what was his first match on tour in two months since injury saw him drop out from the US Open. The 37-year-old’s big-serving playstyle suits the indoor conditions in Paris and he was in excellent form before his injury, beating the likes of Sebastian Korda and Hubert Hurkacz at the Cincinnati Masters before taking eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas to three sets in defeat. Isner has never lost to Andrey Rublev in three previous meetings but the Russian will be more desperate than ever to get a first win on the board with ATP Finals qualification on the line. World number nine Rublev is coming off a surprise defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at the Vienna Open last time out but he did win his previous tournament at the Gijon Open to make it four ATP titles this season. Four of the last five sets played between Rublev and Isner have gone the American’s way and three of them were tiebreaks. That makes taking isner to win at least a set and at least one tiebreak in the match look a useful combination.
