THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Sebastian Korda set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 25th this week after an excellent run to the semi-finals at Queen’s last week was ended, somewhat flatly, by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The American reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January after stunning two-time Melbourne finalist Daniil Medvedev but an injury at that stage saw him miss three months on tour. Korda used that time effectively, coming back almost unrecognisable with a filled-out ‘new body’ that should give him extra power on the faster courts and his run to the round of 16 here two years ago should be a target to break, not emulate, this fortnight. This is a tricky opener, though, against former world number 35 Jiri Vesely. The Czech is currently ranked outside the top 500 after suffering a long injury lay-off of his own but he has twice made the round of 16 at SW19 as a deceptively strong performer in these conditions. It is worth taking Korda to win this first meeting with Vesely outright here as we gauge the American’s level.
