THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula did well to navigate past a really natural clay courter in 18th seed Martina Trevisan on Monday, backing-up some solid results so far in Madrid. The 29-year-old reached her first Masters final here last season before a three-set defeat to Ons Jabeur but after an incredible season of deep runs and near misses she finally claimed her first WTA 1000 title in Guadalajara last October. The American reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer to prove her credentials on clay before coming up against eventual champion Iga Swiatek, who halted her pursuit of four titles last season. The pair could meet up again here in the semi-finals but world number 13 Veronika Kudermetova should not be underestimated after she saved match points to oust Daria Kasatkina in three on Monday. The 25-year-old’s last four matches on tour have gone to three sets to suggest this first meeting with Pegula can go the distance but it is hard to see Pegula, who is probably the most consistent performer on tour across all three surfaces, dropping out of this tournament to anyone ranked outside perhaps the top seven. Back Pegula to win outright with three sets about as likely as two.
