World number eight Jessica Pegula should be considered a serious title contender in Cincinnati after a three-set defeat to eventual champion Simona Halep in the semi-finals of the Canada Masters on Saturday. The 28-year-old reached her first Masters final back in May to finish runner-up in three sets to Ons Jabeur and she has won back-to-back Women’s Doubles titles in Washington and, alongside Coco Gauff, in Toronto last week for some serious form on her favoured surface. World number 74 Marta Kostyuk is a strong candidate for a top 10 player of the future but she is already a threat at 20 years old, with a three-set victory over Camila Giorgi on Tuesday an impressive debut in Cincinnati. A first meeting with US number one Pegula is likely to be too steep a climb but the Ukrainian is good enough to suggest backing Pegula to win outright is the sensible call.
