THE PREDICTION

World number four Jessica Pegula beat Peyton Stearns in straight sets on Thursday to get her Washington Open campaign underway. The 29-year-old won her maiden WTA title here back in 2019 in the first sign of the player she would become, with six quarter-finals reached at Grand Slams since the start of 2021 and a Masters title won late last year at the Guadalajara Open. Pegula will receive plenty of support as the home hopeful here but it is unlikely to be partisan against former world number three Elina Svitolina, whose incredible comeback to the tour from motherhood shows no signs of stopping. The 28-year-old was ranked outside the top 500 at the start of May but she claimed her 17th WTA title at the Strasbourg Open before a run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and she beat that with a tournament-defining run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon. The Ukrainian has come back stronger, more focused and so much more aggressive than she used to play and back-to-back straight-set victories this week over Belarussian Victoria Azarenka and Russia’s Daria Kasatkina are proof of that.

Pegula leads their head-to-head 2-1 after most recently wining both of their encounters on hardcourts two years ago but she has never faced this version. Back Svitolina to earn at least a set in what could be a thriller, and likely three-setter, to leave the victor up to chance.
