26-year-old Jelena Ostapenko moved back up to world number 10 after an excellent campaign at the Adelaide International this week, picking up her seventh WTA title with eye-catching results over the likes of Caroline Garcia, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Daria Kasatkina. The Latvian set a career-high WTA world ranking of fifth after storming to victory at Roland-Garros in 2017 and after a few seasons in the wilderness she has come back strong over the last 12 months, reaching quarter-finals both here and at the US Open. Ostapenko can often lose her way on court but her ruthless best hitting can overpower anybody on tour, most notably world number one Iga Swiatek whom she stunned to reach the last eight in New York back in September.
World number 116 Kimberly Birrell once reached the third round here in 2019 but the home hopeful has drawn one of the clear short straws in this vastly competitive draw. Back Ostapenko to win in straight sets to make it six on the spin.
