THE LOWDOWN

JASMINE PAOLINI

World number 46 Jasmine Paolini beat Katie Boulter in straight sets on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells in successive seasons. The 26-year-old reached the third round last October with a shock win over Elise Mertens in the same vein of form that saw the Italian win her first WTA title at the Slovenia Open.

ARYNA SABALENKA

World number three Aryna Sabalenka lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters last month. The 23-year-old has struggled with her game for the majority of the season so far but she has improved over the last month or so, with a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open a huge achievement considering her form. Sabalenka owns three Masters titles amongst her total of 10 WTA titles, including last season’s Madrid Open.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka missed out on Indian Wells last season as she contracted covid-19 on the eve of the tournament as an unvaccinated player and she has suffered the consequences since with poor form and fitness issues. Having regained control of her main weapon, her brutal serve, at the Qatar Open she should be considered a real threat this time around as the top seed at Indian Wells now that Barbora Krejcikova has pulled out. Jasmine Paolini is a dogged competitor who will pounce on any opportunity here, so backing Sabalenka to come through outright in her first match for some time seems a sensible move.
