THE PREDICTION

World number 138 Anna Blinkova came back from a set down to beat Anastasia Potapova on Saturday in one of her best results of 2022, backing-up an excellent three-setter over Anhelina Kainina. The Russian has been ranked inside the top 60 on tour before but after a tarried season so far her sudden burst into form is certainly surprising, as is reaching her first WTA tour final. World number 78 Jasmine Paolini overcame in-form Xiyu Wang in three sets to back-up a similarly strong result over Jule Niemeier on Friday and the Italian has the edge on experience here after claiming her maiden WTA title this time last season at the Slovenia Open. Blinkova won their only tour-level encounter at the Australian Open back in 2020 but Paolini has taken their two most recent matches at Challenger level in straight sets, most recently in July. Blinkova’s sudden surge will be a tough force for the Italian to stop but with three sets likelier than two backing Paolini to take at least one of them looks the sensible move here.
