THE PREDICTION

Home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis claimed his maiden ATP title at Adelaide 2 last season amongst jubilant scenes and he fared well at Adelaide 1 too, losing in the semi-finals to eventual champion Gael Monfils. The world number 93 took that form straight into a joyous Men’s Doubles Grand Slam title alongside Nick Kyrgios and further success in that partnership saw the Aussies qualify for the ATP Finals as a duo in a year of firsts for Kokkinakis. It remains to be seen if the 26-year-old can push on in his singles career after a full year of fitness in what seems like forever but an opening victory over Maxime Cressy in two tiebreaks is a hugely impressive start.

However, world number 15 Jannik Sinner is several steps up in quality and the Italian looked focused in his straight-sets opener over Kyle Edmund. 21-year-old Sinner enjoyed the best season of his career in 2022 at least in terms of performances, most notably at Wimbledon where he beat Carlos Alcaraz in four commanding sets and took eventual champion Novak Djokovic to five in the quarter-finals. Sinner was part of the best match of the season when he lost a five-set classic to eventual champion Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the US Open and a first Grand Slam final should be the Italian’s target this year. Kokkinakis took Sinner to three tight sets in a defeat at the Cincinnati Open last summer and with the whole of Adelaide behind him something similar could take place again here but back the Italian to eventually come through a potential thriller.
