THE LOWDOWN

JANNIK SINNER

World number 10 Jannik Sinner overcame a tough challenge in three sets against in-form Benjamin Bonzi to reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells in successive seasons. The Italian finished runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz at the Miami Open last season for a benchmark to beat at Masters level, with a first ATP 500 title won last season at the Washington Open one of his five total titles. 20-year-old Sinner reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this season before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of just two defeats this season after he lost to Hurkacz at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

NICK KYRGIOS

Former world number 13 Nick Kyrgios was clearly unaffected by his defeat in the Men’s Doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis as he beat world number eight Casper Ruud in straight sets on Monday. The 26-year-old recently won the Australian Open alongside friend and compatriot Kokkinakis and that has clearly affected his single form as he brings not just his trademark bravado but a consistent game to Indian Wells. Kyrgios finished runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov at the Cincinnati Masters back in 2017, with his most recent titles both ATP 500 events at the Mexican Open and Washington Open in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

This is going to be a tough day for Jannik Sinner’s classy mentality in a first meeting with Nick Kyrgios. 20-year-old Sinner is a top 10 player by right but he is yet to really break into mainstream support against the more popular players on tour and Kyrgios will likely have the crowd in the palm of his hand from the outset. The Aussie is yet to drop a set this week as he plays a consistent brand of powerful tennis that will win him titles this season if he decides to come back to a modicum of tour life. This match should be kept well away from an accumulator but given that world number 52 Benjamin Bonzi managed to take a set off Sinner in the third round, backing a confident and well-supported Kyrgios to win at least a set looks reasonable here. Kyrgios will be desperate to meet his nemesis Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.
