THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating first encounter between two players set to become rivals, alongside the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, over the next few years on tour. 22-year-old Jannik Sinner came into the Shanghai Masters at a career-high ATP world ranking of fourth after winning the China Open last week, ousting Alcaraz and then Daniil Medvedev in the final to do so, whilst Shelton can move back up to his career-high of 19th with one more win after an excellent comeback over Roman Safiullin on Sunday. The 20-year-old still owns a negative record for 2023, currently at 20-21, but deep runs to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and then semi-finals at the US Open are proof of his ability either side of a tough first summer on tour. There are more questions than answers in this first clash between two future heavyweights but Shelton has so far fallen short against the very top players on tour to suggest Sinner can be tentatively backed to edge through on a seven-match winning streak.
