World number 35 Tommy Paul visibly improved last season, with a career-best victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the Canada Masters one of the best matches of the season in terms of entertainment factor. The 25-year-old reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon before defeat to Cam Norrie in three sets and he ended the year in great form with a run to the Paris Masters including a stunning victory over an admittedly under-par Rafael Nadal. World number 167 Jan-Lennard Struff is better than his current ranking suggests but the German has struggled to find his best level consistently enough in recent seasons to trouble the top 50. Struff’s best wins came whilst representing Germany on Davis Cup duty last season with a big win over Denis Shapovalov, who went on to win the title with Canada, and a 3-0 record in the group stages. Paul has beaten Struff in straight sets in both of their previous meetings but the American has so far started 2023 a little tentatively.
