18-year-old Jakub Mensik has progressed his status as ‘up-and-comer’ forwards to ‘rising star’ this week with three fabulous upsets over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Andy Murray and now top seed Andrey Rublev. The Czech will break inside the top 100 for the first time for his efforts this week but he should be targeting a maiden ATP title if he can maintain this level, with last month’s five-set exit to Hubert Hurkacz at the Australian Open proof of his big-game efficacy. Former world number six Gael Monfils should not be underestimated, though, as he takes on a player almost half his age. The 37-year-old stunned fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert on Thursday to back-up an excellent result over Zhizhen Zhang and his unorthodox game is a tough thing to face for the first time – particularly for a player with little tour experience. Mensik’s run deserves all the adulation but he would be forgiven for letting stress get in the way here. Back the teenager to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
