THE LOWDOWN

J.J. WOLF

23-year-old J.J. Wolf is yet to drop a set from a strong qualifying round through to a straight-sets victory over Hugo Gaston in the first round on Thursday. The 23-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 120th back in 2020 and he has already jumped over 20 places higher than his current ranking of 209th.

ROBERTO BAUTISTA AGUT

World number 15 Roberto Bautista Agut has played some exceptional tennis this season already, with a storming display for Spain at the ATP Cup halted in the final by Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 33-year-old won the 10th ATP title of his stellar career at the Qatar Open last month, his first since winning the same tournament back in 2019. RBA lost to Andy Murray in the final of the Shanghai Masters back in 2016 but he has never made it past the round of 16 at Indian Wells.

THE PREDICTION

J.J.Wolf should be well backed here as an American underdog and he has the slightest chance at an upset after some excellent performances so far in the desert. However, Roberto Bautista Agut tends not to dip out of form for too long and after an early exit at the Dubai Tennis Championships following his title in Doha he should be raring to go here. The Spaniard’s combative style should suit the conditions at Indian Wells and it is a surprise to find he has not fared better here over the years. Take RBA to win in straight sets.
