THE PREDICTION

In-form former world number 19 Karolina Muchova is motoring her way back up the rankings after a long injury lay-off last season and she should be considered a dark horse for a deep run at the least here in Madrid. The current world number 51 conceded just four games to Anett Kontaveit on Tuesday to get a strong foothold here and the high altitude conditions suit her powerful groundstrokes on which she will have to depend against an excellent clay-courter in Irina-Camelia Begu. 31st seed Begu took Jessica Pegula to three sets at the Charleston Open earlier this month before a tight defeat and three of her five WTA titles have come on clay including last year’s Palermo Ladies Open. The Romanian is unfortunate to draw one of the toughest unseeded players so early on but she is well capable of taking this to three if Muchova does not start fast. Back the Czech to win outright here.
