THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek is the defending champion at the US Open, where she won her third of now four Grand Slam titles last summer. The 22-year-old claimed her third Roland-Garros title in June with a tight three-set victory over Karolina Muchova in a pattern of players starting to find more joy against her ruthless brand of usually dominant tennis, with last week’s semi-final defeat to Coco Gauff at the Cincinnati Open her first to the American after seven wins on the spin. Swiatek remains the favourite for the title in two weeks’ time but recent late defeats at Masters events to eventual champions Gauff, and Jessica Pegula in Montreal the week before, say she will have to up her game this time around. World number 92 Rebecca Peterson is a player capable of the occasional burst of strong form but the Swede has failed to win a tour-level match since early July. Swiatek has conceded just six games to Peterson in two comfortable wins and she can be backed to win this third in fewer than 17.5 games.
