World number one Iga Swiatek conceded just one game to Danielle Collins on Wednesday to make a huge statement of intent in Cincinnati. The 22-year-old laboured a lot more than usual last week in Montreal, playing out three three-setters before coming unstuck against eventual champion Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. World number 24 Qinwen Zheng dropped the first set of her bucket-list match against former world number one Venus Williams before fatigue took over, with the 20-year-old winning 11 games on the spin to fight back handily. The Chinese rising star won her maiden WTA title at the Palermo Ladies Open on clay last month and that surface has been kindest to her so far, with a memorable three-set defeat to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros last summer the Pole’s toughest test en-route to the title. Swiatek ultimately leads their head-to-head 3-0 but two of their three encounters have been hard-fought.
