THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek was in a real match with former number one Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday but she came through comfortably enough in the second set after an 8-6 tiebreaker in the first. The 22-year-old claimed the fourth Grand Slam title of her career in June with a third at Roland-Garros and she comes into the hardcourt swing ahead of her title defence at the US Open with clear confidence after winning the Poland Open two weeks ago. This could be a proper thriller on Thursday against world number 17 Karolina Muchova, who finished runner-up top the Pole in three tight sets in Paris. The 26-year-old beat Sorana Cirstea in straight sets on Wednesday to take back-to-back wins for the first time since making her first major final but she is probably some way off the level she was producing there after a recent injury at Wimbledon.
Taking Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets is usually the answer but three sets are a distinct possibility and, actually, if Muchova can take a set here she becomes the slight favourite in-play as Swiatek can sometimes freeze once properly challenged.
